  • African Legend Makes Waves in Delft

    10 Jun 2013

Delft is a township on the outskirts of Cape Town. In 2008, Delft made international news, with shocking images of the protest action in the community. It started when the provincial housing department decided to move 6,000 people from the Joe Slovo shack settlement near the airport where tourists could see them, to Delft, 30km away, hidden away from tourists. These families were violently evicted by the police to put down their protest and the Joe Slovo shack dwellers were forcibly removed to Delft.

The 2008 disaster has not stopped this community from growing from strength to strength; today Delft has over 92,000 inhabitants. Sadly, poverty, crime, substandard schools, lack of employment and substance abuse is rife in the community and the youth are faced with the several challenges and often limited opportunities.

In March 2010, African Legend, started working in this community. We believe that individuals are dramatically influenced by their support systems and felt a moral obligation to become an extension of this community, to expand the perspective of the youth in Delft, and make them aware of life's possibilities.

  • Christine Rehm shares her amazing journey at African Legend. We thank you, Christine

    03 Jun 2013

My name is Christine; I am a 25 year old German student that lived in Cape Town for six months, since September 2012. I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to teach Maths to African Legend, Grade 11 learners, since September. I came to South Africa to complete an internship in online marketing at “Show Me Cape Town”. It was my first visit to the country but from the first day that I arrived here, I immediately fell in love with the country. I love the beautiful scenery and the friendly people, but I could not help but notice, that there are many problems in the country, due to a lack of education for learners. This is my story at African Legend....

  • Classes without limitations!

    01 Jun 2013

We bet, you never noticed that this class was held in a shipping container. Nothing stops the learning at African Legend.

Our programmes have had extraordinary success and we receive many requests to take on more learners, and are not always able to accommodate them, due to lack of classroom facilities. We decided to create our own classroom facility this year, to ensure regular “Classes without limitations”, and provide a consultation centre to our learners in Delft and Du Noon. We need your help, we need more containers. Oops so sorry, we meant more classrooms.
