Today's help is tomorrow's future

About Us

African Legend, located in Cape Town, is a non-profit organization that provides educational programmes for youths living in poverty. Since 2008, African Legend has helped over 250 teenagers learn valuable skills and become more education-focused in order to finish matric, be prepared for university, and ultimately improve their ability to live fulfilling lives.

Our organisation offers educational programmes which currently include extra classes, maths and physics experiments, and educational excursion to museums, businesses from various sector, science institutes, and libraries. Together with other NGOs, we also organize youth festivals and soccer tournaments to foster companionship, leadership skills and social interaction as well as to reassert a sense of hope for a better future

Our vision is to see young people educated and trained with required skills for socio-economic development and growth in South Africa.

Our mission is to support youths from the most deprived areas of Cape Town. We are committed that through our training and support programs, more youths in Cape Town’s poorest communities have the opportunity to achieve success in their lives.

African Legend has been dedicated to making a difference in the lives of youth living in poverty since we began.

The mission of African Legend is the pursuit of the following principles:

  • Commitment: African Legend wants to inspire pro-social friendships, strong interpersonal and leadership skills, and instil a sense of hope in the future.
  • Responsibility: The focus of African Legend is to empower youth in establishing goals and following through on commitments.
  • Possibility: African Legend wants to expand the perspective of young people to make them aware of life's possibilities.
  • Support: An individual is dramatically influenced by their support system.

In order to achieve this, we offer various services including the following:

  • Recruiting skilled volunteers that teach either in our extra class programmes, demonstrate maths or physics experiments classes, accompany educational excursions or coach soccer/cricket teams.
  • Extensive extra classes: The focus is to decrease the failure rate of learners in schools through extensive exercises in extra classes. We strive to level the learning standards that enable learners to successfully overcome social challenges and to enter academic studies. We have a maximum of 10 students per class to ensure the quality and personal contact to the student. Classes are offered three times a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays after school, and Saturday morning.
  • Maths & Physics Experiments: As part of our educational development programme, we provide practical, hands-on Physics and Maths’ Experiments to stimulate the interest in sciences and demonstrate applied text book knowledge. All experiments are developed in line with learners’ needs and respective grade levels.
  • Educational Excursions: We organise visits to science centres, museums and businesses in different industries to allow pupils to see the application of school subjects in real life.
  • Sport Programme: We see sport as a fertile ground to stimulate social interaction between youth, to build teamwork skills and self-confidence, and to provide an environment where positive values can flourish.
  • Youth Festival: Together with NGOs in Muizenberg and Du Noon, we organise youth festivals where young people perform and present learned poetry, music, and dance skills.

Our Extra Class and Maths & Physics Experiment services are currently our programmes with the most impact.

In addition to the above activities, our afterschool programs aims to provide our youth with:

  • On-going relationships with our organization,
  • An environment that strengthens social skills and character,
  • Healthy snacks and/or meals to meet students' nutritional needs,
  • Safe and well-designed indoor and outdoor spaces.

In order to offer these services, we recruit adults from Cape Town as well as international volunteers who have achieved personal and professional success in their lives.  For our volunteer teachers, we have a training programme that develops rhetorical and teaching skills and assists by the development of lessons to meet the specific need of their students.
